The nearby town of Pienza is one of the very few successful projects to fulfill the Renaissance notion of the “ideal city”. Designed by Rossellino under the aegis of Pope Pius II (Piccolomini), it reflects the idea of uniformity and harmony in urban structure developed by humanistic architects.

Walking through the narrow streets of the old town, the visitor can admire such wonders as the Cathedral, set in the elegant Piazza Pio II, and the 13th century Church of S. Francesco; he should also take the opportunity to sample Pienza’s delicious cheese, the pride of local products.

Admiring the perfection of Pienza, the poet Giovanni Pascoli described it as “born of a thought of love and a dream of beauty”.
