Siena is one of Europe’s most favored towns in terms of history, culture and beauty. It is also the seat of one of the oldest universities in Europe, and the setting for the famous Palio: an event which every year draws huge numbers of tourists to the city and its surrounding area.
Siena is a wonderful example of mediaeval town planning, and still retains intact the system of wide streets and alleyways which surround the delightful Piazza del Campo and the magnificent historic buildings framing the square.
The town stands out for its beauty, and also for its lively program of cultural events (such as Siena Jazz and many other initiatives). The historic center is closed to traffic to conserve its attraction, and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995.
